One of the ways we fulfill this purpose is through our Legislative Day\, giving home educators from across the state an opportunity to share their own experiences and convictions with their elected officials in Albany.\n\nThis year\, there are already two bills we are working hard to advance! One is the Sports Bill (A389 and S3436)\, which will allow homeschool students to participate on high school sports teams. The other is the Letter of Substantial Equivalence Bill (A2326 and S199)\, which will require District Superintendents to write the Letter when students have completed their home education in compliance with Section 100.10 of the Commissioner’s Regulations. We’re hoping to see it move this year! \n\n\nSeveral legislators have asked for specific examples of our students who have struggled to obtain the Letter. If that applies to you\, would you please send your story to legislative@nysleah.org? We are specifically looking for testimonies regarding the following:\n\n– The importance of the Letter for home educated students– How difficult the Letter is to obtain– Ramifications when superintendents refuse to write the Letter– Stories of colleges refusing to accept home educated students \n\n\n\nBRING THE WHOLE FAMILY!We are homeschoolers\, so\, of course\, this is a family-friendly event! No childcare is available\, as we encourage you to have your children present during the meetings. There will be a room set aside for nursing and a place for you to put coats. Homeschool Families make up 5% of the school age population in LA – your legislators need to know you and hear your opinion on prospective bills that affect our families.\nOld State Capitol Tour – The Old State Capitol is open until 4pm and free to the public. This historic building has been restored to her former beauty and is a must see while you are in Baton Rouge. DESCRIPTION:The goal of Capitol Day is to provide information about private home education to our California state legislators and their staff in a friendly\, professional manner. This also allows legislators and their staff the opportunity to visit with real homeschool families. \nOur Capitol Day volunteers will visit each of the 120 legislators’ Capitol offices\, providing each office with an information packet about private homeschooling. These packets help explain private home education as well as provide research showing that privately home-educated children do very well compared with students from the public schools. \nCapitol Day serves several purposes: \n\nIt INFORMS any newly elected legislators and their staff\, and reminds veteran legislators of the benefits of private homeschooling.\nIt STRENGTHENS our working relationship with them on a professional level.\nIt leaves them with a POINT OF CONTACT if they ever have any questions about home education.\nIt EDUCATES private homeschool families on the inner workings of the legislative process\, trains them in how to advocate for homeschooling freedoms\, and gives them a hands-on learning experience in government as they visit legislators’ offices at the capitol.\n\nAPPLICATIONS are being accepted through Monday\, January 20\, 2025.

This event is free to attend\, but registration is required. Attendees have the option to bring your own lunch or pre-order a box lunch with your registration. In addition\, MACHE t-shirts are available for purchase with your registration. (Order deadline for box lunches and t-shirts is March 7\, 2024).
